You’ve heard the Tube-Tech CL 1B on some of the best sounding vocals of the last 30 years, and in this video I wanted to show you why it feels like “magic” — but with something more concrete than just vibes. I run the CL 1B (I’m using the Softube CL 1B Mk II) on a vocal and use an oscilloscope so you can literally see what the compressor is doing: smoothing peaks, controlling dynamics, and then bringing the body back up with output/makeup gain so the vocal stays present without sounding obviously squashed. I walk you through the simplest starting point: Fixed mode, where attack and release are locked at 1 ms and 50 ms. Then I move to Manual mode to get more aggressive, explaining how fast attack/release changes the feel, why high ratios can turn your vocal into a “sausage,” and where that can actually be useful in dense mixes. I also show how super-fast settings can introduce fizzy distortion, and why parallel (New York-style) compression is a smart way to use heavy settings without ruining the natural vocal. Finally, I tackle the confusing-but-powerful Fixed/Manual behavior, where the attack knob effectively acts like a delay between release stages, which can lead to even more transparent vocal control. I wrap up with sidechain options and the sidechain low cut, which is genuinely handy for stopping low-end vocal energy from triggering compression too early.
