In this video I take a look at Taps and Portals from Lunacy Audio—two delay-based effects processors made in collaboration with Ben Jordan. I start with Taps, and I deliberately begin with the “normal delay stuff” so you can get your bearings: time in musical values or seconds, feedback for longer repeats, and yes—there’s even a hold mode for infinite delay, plus a very welcome panic button when things get out of hand. From there, I get into where Taps starts to feel genuinely rethought: visual tap placement, stereo spread, ping-pong, and then the really fun timing tools like Skew and Cluster, which let you bunch taps toward the start or end and create accelerating, shifting rhythmic patterns. Then I move into the pitch and tape sections. The pitch tab lets me apply different pitch engines (I demo the Comb engine) across individual taps, which can turn a simple pattern into something much more harmonically interesting. The tape controls let you “mess it up” further for texture and instability. Finally, I show Portals inside Lunacy’s Beam environment, where it becomes more than a straightforward delay. Because Beam’s routing is the point, I demonstrate dropping extra effects into the feedback loop (like Grains) and highlight a Ben Jordan preset—“Wet Hot American Shimmer”—to show how you can get a ridiculous amount of ethereal sound from just one or two piano notes. For me, it’s refreshing to see a company pushing boundaries instead of just emulating hardware from the 1960s.
