FETish is my pick for that classic 1176-style job: fast attack and fast release to control sudden peaks and transients. There’s no threshold control, so you drive the input into the fixed threshold and then use output to make up level. The extra sidechain filtering and external sidechain options are a big bonus for a free plugin.
