STONE is mostly an EQ, but the reason I’m even talking about it is the combo of its “musical” Pultec-like low end behavior and the surround/width feature that can rescue a bland mono source. I do have complaints—especially the weird choice to tie drive and surround to one control—but I still got a pleasing guitar tone quickly and easily.

Pros

  • +Surround/width feature can make a mono source feel stereo
  • +Bottom EQ has a Pultec-like, pleasing low-end shape
  • +Fast to get a usable result with minimal tweaking

Cons

  • -Drive/saturation is extremely subtle in practice
  • -Drive and surround being linked on one control is confusing
  • -EQ is restrictive (limited frequency control, stepped presence, boost-only presence)
