Canon 28mm

The Canon RF 28mm pancake has become my go-to travel lens because it’s so small I basically treat it like a lens cap on my Canon R8. It’s super sharp—especially around f/4—great for photos, great for video, and at about $300 it’s a total no-brainer even if the build feels a bit plasticky.

Pros

  • +Extremely small and light (true everyday carry)
  • +Versatile 28mm focal length for travel and environmental portraits
  • +Great autofocus for talking-head video
  • +Very sharp, especially stopped down around f/4
  • +Excellent value around $300

Cons

  • -Plasticky feel / build quality isn’t the best
  • -Not as wide as ultra-wide lenses for huge landmarks (may need panoramas)
