Driving down this lonely stretch of highway in Burnet TX, you may be shocked and bewildered to see a ski lift, but rejoice as you’ve just stumbled upon the first lift access bike park in Texas; Spider Mountain. Within two hours driving distance of both San Antonio and Austin, local riders are stoked this place has opened, and so am I. Today we are joined by friends Huntstyle and Chris CXK. Let’s pay our $50 entry fee, get a wristband and head on over to the lift. If you couldn’t tell by this moment, it is my first time ever at a bike park. Once you are at the top take a moment to enjoy the scenic overlook of Lake Buchanan, and then choose from 4 downhill trails. We decided to start on the Green Itsy Bitsy. This trail is super flowy and a nice change of pace from the typical Texas chunk. Next up let’s check out the Blue Viper’s Den. A bit more technical, a bit steeper, quite a bit faster, and slightly more exciting, this ended up being my favorite trail of the day. At the road crossing you have a choice to follow Viper’s Den all the way to the bottom, or branch off over to Venom for some jump practice. These jumps felt absolutely perfect and after hitting them repeatedly, something magical happened….I actually cleared one. After that joyous moment lets head back to the top where we decided to try out the black diamond sticky icky which proved to be less momentous for me. This was far more difficult than the blue trails, and I ended up having to walk and almost fall doing so down one feature. After that I was able to ride the rest and dent my frame. It also turned out my crank arm was loose the entire morning. Luckily Spider Mountain has a bike repair shop and I was able to borrow some tools to fix it. After I got my bike problems situated we ended up doing the blue and green runs about 15 times. That’s a pretty staggering number, and with that many runs I was definitely seeing improvement in just one day. With small lines on a Friday and an 8 minute chair lift ride to rest up, it was super easy to ride from open to close. I did go and film some on Saturday, and the lines were substantially longer, so if you can go on a Friday, I think that would give you more ride time. I had an absolute blast at this place even though I only rode 3-4 trails, but as Seth’s bike hacks video mentioned they will eventually have up to 24 trails. I’m a total cheapskate and the $50 ticket seemed steep to me at first, but after 3 seconds of riding I was like take my money! For $300 bucks you can also get a season pass, so if you live nearby and can go at least 6 times…it’s actually a pretty great deal, and with more trails on the way, you should have something new to explore each time. I’m sure most of you watching this video have already been to Spider Mountain, but if you haven’t I highly recommend it. If you have been, what did you think of Spider Mountain? What are some other amazing bike parks you’ve ridden? Let me know if the comments below. I’ll definitely be back to conquer the black diamond, and who knows…maybe even take a stab at the double black diamond. As always if you did enjoy this video, don’t forget to give it thumbs up and subscribe if you aren’t already. Make sure you come back next week where Huntstyle and I go to Reveille Peak Ranch. Thanks so much for watching, and until next week, stay rowdy within reason.
