Most open-water divers learn how to deploy a SMB (surface marker buoy, also known as a safety sausage) at the surface, but never learn how to shoot a DSMB from underwater. This is a handy skill for when you're on a drift dive, when you need an ascent line, when you're decompressing, and in general to just mark your position while you're still underwater.
