About This Video

In this video I tackle the headline that just won’t die: “Tylenol causes autism.” And like most medical hype cycles, the truth lives in the boring middle—some signals, lots of limitations, and a whole lot of people talking past each other. I walk you through what acetaminophen (Tylenol) is used for in pregnancy, why it’s been considered a go-to option, and what the newer observational studies are actually suggesting when they report an association with autism or ADHD. I also explain why “linked to” doesn’t mean “caused by.” Pregnancy research is loaded with confounders: fever, infection, inflammation, pain conditions, dosing frequency, genetics, and the fact that people who take meds during pregnancy are often doing so for a reason that itself may affect neurodevelopment. I get into why pediatricians and OBs have pushed back on the panic, how autism diagnosis has evolved over time, and why autism is almost certainly multifactorial—not a single-medication boogeyman. My takeaway: don’t ignore the conversation, but don’t let fear-mongering replace nuance. If you’re pregnant, the goal is always the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary time, and a real discussion with your clinician about risk vs benefit—especially if you’re treating fever, which has its own risks.
