About This Video

In this video I teamed up with the Ballistic High Speed crew to answer a question people weirdly underestimate: what happens if you put your hand—or your face—near a gun’s muzzle blast even if the bullet never touches you? Using high-speed footage, I break down what those escaping gases actually do to human tissue, and why “it’s just air” is a dangerous myth. Depending on the firearm and the distance, you can go from superficial burns to injuries that are catastrophic and functionally unrepairable. I walk through what muzzle blast can do to skin, muscle, nerves, and blood vessels, and why certain platforms (like revolvers and carbines) can still cause significant damage even when the muzzle isn’t right up against you. Then we scale up to the truly nasty stuff—high-powered handguns and rifles—where the pressure wave and heat can create deep lacerations, fractures, and even traumatic amputations. I also talk about what to do if a severe injury or amputation happens: control bleeding, protect the tissue, and get to definitive care fast. And yes—this is also why I keep pushing organ and tissue donation. Real injuries happen, and preparation saves lives.
