A lot of the real risk comes from repetitive, smaller impacts—those routine collisions that don’t always look dramatic but still rattle the brain. I also walk through what we actually know about CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy): what it is, the symptoms people worry about, and why diagnosis is so complicated. Right now, definitive diagnosis is only possible after death, which creates a huge problem for players and families trying to make decisions in real time. And then we go to the uncomfortable part—where science, tradition, money, and identity collide—because the question isn’t just “is football dangerous?” It’s what we’re willing to accept as the cost of being ‘HIM.’
