This Guitar Trend Has Always Confused Me...

This guitar trend has always confused me. Which trend? The trend of copying other people's rigs in the hope that you'll somehow magically sound like that guitar player. There is a growing trend and opinion that if you buy 'X' pedal then you'll sound like 'X' guitar player and it's simply not true. If you're copying other people's gear for fun (because pedals are fun at the end of the day) then that's absolutely fine, but what I do have a probelm with is when people profess that gear is the only way to achieve the tone of certain guitar players, John Mayer being a key guitarist that everyone tries to emulate. This has caused the prices of certain pedals associated with John and other notable guitarists, pedals such as the Ibanez TS10, Marshall Bluesbreaker, Keeley Katana, Klon Centaur to all become astrnomically expensive and I don't feel that's right - those pedals are not worth that much money and they won't make you sound like John Mayer. I'm making this video for anyone new to gear to reassure you that you don't need to chase down specific pedals and gear, instead, try and understand what those pedals do to the tone of the guitar and use that as your basis for choosing the gear that's right for you. John Mayer has great tone, we should all aim to sound awesome, but don't be fooled that thinking you need the exact same pedal to achive the same thing. It's more important to think about how that guitarist plays the guitar and to really emulate their sounds it's more about emulating their technique - THAT'S what we should be focussing on if we want to sound great - not gear. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrisharvey... ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gear Used 🎸 Revv D20 Amp (straight into Logic Pro X via built in TwoNotes Torpedo) Logic Pro X Audient iD14 USB Audio Interface SE Electronics X1s Condenser Microphone Camera Gear 📸 Sony A7iii Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 lens Fovitec Softbox Lights My name is Chris Harvey, I'm a UK-based Guitarist, Guitar Tutor, Session Guitarist and Content Creator.
