Confused by the CAGED system? Here's why it's useful. In short, it helps you map out the fretboard, create interesting chord voicings and add more melody to your solos. Especially as a lead guitarist. The CAGED system allows you to map out the different major chord inversions up and down the fretboard so I immediately thought it was only applicable to rhythm guitar and wouldn't be useful when soloing or doing lead guitar... I was wrong. Learning the CAGED system was a real turning point for me when it came to developing my own sound and style as a lead guitarist. Knowing that, wherever you land on the fretboard, there'll be a chord tone for you to land on during the chord changes in your solo make your solos way smoother and really helps you play the changes rather than just playing one scale pattern over all chords in the progression. In this video I break down what the CAGED system is if you're completely new to it or just want to brush up on your understanding of it. Then I break down how I visualise the CAGED shapes in relation to the Major scale to make sure i'm hitting all the right chord tones when soloing over a major chord progression.
