About This Video

In this video, I walk through a real Mighty Network as if I’m a brand new member—because that’s where onboarding either clicks… or falls apart. I explore Sandra Hardage’s My Journey of Faith community (thank you, Sandra!) first in the browser and then in the Mighty Networks phone app, because those two experiences are very different. I use the “busy convention” analogy: returning members know where to go, but new members rely on signs, a help desk, and clear next steps. Your onboarding needs to play that role. As I click around, I point out what’s working (like a Welcome Checklist that feels personal and a strong “you belong here” vibe) and what creates friction (too many spaces, duplicated member lists, default tab names like “Discovery,” and links that don’t go where they say they go—like notifications sending me to a profile). My biggest takeaways: explain “why” before “what,” hyperlink directly to key actions (profile + notifications), rename features based on purpose (not platform terms), and simplify the space structure—often by combining content into fewer spaces using Pages and/or a Table of Contents. Then, test everything in the app, where the navigation is easy to miss and overwhelm hits faster.
