Goshuin from Japan Temples and Shrines

Temples and shrines I visited in Japan, organized by city and date. For larger sites, I noted the goshuin office location and whether there was an admission fee. All fees were paid in cash. Goshuin fees ranged from 300–500 yen, with one exception for a special embroidered goshuin (noted below). Admission fees ranged from 300–700 yen. Tokyo - November 23, 2025 Sensō-ji Google Maps Sensō-ji: https://maps.app.goo.gl/MuW29QRC1vYMZYvE6 The Sensō-ji grounds include a few temple buildings and many shopping stalls (food and merchandise) just outside. The goshuin office is in a building behind and to the left of the main hall. They offer both pre-written and on-demand goshuin. Free admission. Free admission. Kyoto - November 25, 2025 Kiyomizu-dera—https://maps.app.goo.gl/Sk4EnV1m1mk6Lxkj7 One of Kyoto's most popular temples, Kiyomizu-dera offers a beautiful lookout. During the autumn season, we enjoyed stunning fall foliage. The goshuin office is in a small building behind the main hall. Admission fee: Yes Kōdai-ji Temple—https://maps.app.goo.gl/GMRfCGXp3uqog34P6 Kōdai-ji Temple includes a small bamboo forest—recommended if you don't have time to visit Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Admission fee: Yes—combo admission includes Entoku-in Temple. Entoku-in Temple—https://maps.app.goo.gl/nU54Y7rgsdvXdbFk8 Entoku-in Temple features multiple EKI stamps and a beautiful rock garden. The goshuin office is just beyond the exit. Only pre-made goshuin were available when I visited in late November. Admission fee: Yes, included in combo ticket with Kōdai-ji Temple Yasaka Shrine—https://maps.app.goo.gl/DWApfpx74sC6AaFk6 We witnessed some sort of ceremony with what appeared to be a notable person, then were ushered out. Only pre-made goshuin were available when I visited in late November. Free admission. Kyoto - November 26, 2025 Fushimi Inari—https://maps.app.goo.gl/vGT7VauFPAhJiPgL7 I visited Fushimi Inari before the goshuin office opened at 8:30 a.m. We walked about 3 miles through the torii gates and got lost trying to find the top. Free admission. Ryōzen Kannon Temple—https://maps.app.goo.gl/TxnhgukXbaNjSRTPA Ryōzen Kannon Temple features a large outdoor Buddha statue and honors war heroes, including those from WWII. I didn't have my goshuin book with me, so they handwrote a goshuin for me. Admission fee: Yes Kyoto - November 27, 2025 Tenryu-ji—https://maps.app.goo.gl/VSDAscwARYFsMCTGA Tenryu-ji features a rock garden, a small hike around a garden area, and indoor viewing of worship areas. Only pre-made goshuin were offered during peak periods (when I visited). I purchased a special embroidered goshuin for 1,000 yen. Admission fee: Yes Rokuon-ji Kinkaku (Golden Pavilion)—https://maps.app.goo.gl/jdbn2zTdU1s6zjzPA The admission fee covers viewing the temple's exterior and walking around the small pond area. The goshuin office is just before you exit. You cannot enter the Golden Pavilion. Admission fee: Yes Ryōan-ji—https://maps.app.goo.gl/cdqEGydpsQ39kwYB8 Known for its Zen rock garden of 15 rocks, Ryōan-ji includes a short hike around a pond and indoor viewing of worship areas. The goshuin office is at the entrance of the rock garden viewing building. They provide a number tag so you can explore while they handwrite in your goshuin book. Admission fee: Yes Nara - November 28, 2025 Tōdai-ji—https://maps.app.goo.gl/i1qPjaL7zDtTBdMQA Known for once being the world's largest wooden building, Tōdai-ji houses a 15-meter tall Buddha statue inside. Handwritten goshuin are offered near the exit of the main hall. EKI stamps are also available. Admission fee: Yes Todai-ji Nigatsu-do—https://maps.app.goo.gl/bSFGm3hWjWuy9w2D7 This is an annex of Tōdai-ji Temple with city views and its own goshuin. Handwritten goshuin available. Free admission. Kasugataisha Shrine—https://maps.app.goo.gl/WTxP3iXzHgKMQ9HSA Known for its many lanterns, Kasugataisha features an indoor exhibit with lit lanterns in a dark room. They also provide an EKI stamp of a cute deer. The goshuin office is outside the ticket booth and entrance. Admission fee: Yes Osaka - November 29, 2025 Namba Yasaka Jinja—https://maps.app.goo.gl/3B1ssiFTwXMPWZnZA Namba Yasaka is a shrine known for its large lion's head. It's more of a quick stop. We visited before the goshuin office opened and returned the next day to purchase pre-written goshuin. Free admission. Shitennō-ji—https://maps.app.goo.gl/NdzRYVwXHFxc7qfe8 The admission fee for Shitennō-ji was covered by our Osaka Amazing Pass. You walk around a square courtyard, but the highlight is entering the five-story pagoda and climbing to the top. There's also a building housing large Buddha statues (no photos allowed inside).
