As an educator, looking after your own wellbeing is paramount to the success of your students. The strains of teaching can be considerable in the current high performance, high stakes education system and yet this is rarely acknowledged or supported. Teaching also involves emotional labour – balancing the emotions and needs of students with your own emotions and needs – which can cause mental strain, sometimes leading to burnout. This session discusses the emotional regulation systems of the mind and explains how cultivating a compassionate mind can help to maintain balance.
