'It's been unreal': Hwy 417 construction jams Ottawa side streets

Residents on Iris Street in Ottawa's west end are contending with months of cut-through traffic and speeding as construction on Highway 417 between Woodroffe Avenue and Pinecrest Road, part of the Stage 2 O-Train Western Extension, forces drivers off the highway and onto surrounding residential streets. CTV's Natalie van Rooy speaks with Ottawa resident Adam Osman, who says the backups begin as early as 3 p.m. and has been calling for speed bumps and additional traffic patrols, and with resident Basil Plebon, who says congestion is heavy even on weekends. Ottawa city councillor Laine Johnson says her office has been pressuring LRT teams to install traffic-calming measures, including local-traffic-only signs on Iris, Cobden, Southwood and Thorsen streets near Pinecrest School. Mayor Mark Sutcliffe has directed city staff to work with the Ministry of Transportation to accelerate the highway work and open all lanes at least three weeks ahead of schedule.
