First of all, let’s talk about what EQ is. EQ stands for equalization, which is the process of adjusting the balance between frequency components within an audio signal. In simpler terms, EQ enhances or reduces certain frequencies in the sound to achieve a desired tone. Now, let’s talk about the secret. The secret is…the best vocal EQ is no vocal EQ! Yes, you heard that right. Often times, when we’re mixing vocals, we tend to overdo it with the EQ. We think we need to do something to make the vocals sound better, but sometimes, the best thing we can do is not do anything at all. Think about it, when you record a vocal, the microphone already colors the sound with its own EQ. Then, when you mix the vocals with the instrumental track, the frequencies of the vocals and instruments blend and complement each other. So, it’s not always necessary to EQ the vocals. But, if you still want to EQ your vocals, here are some tips to keep in mind: - Don’t always boost. Sometimes, reducing the frequencies that are causing problems can be more effective than boosting the ones that sound good. - Listen to your mix as a whole. EQ affects the entire mix, not just the individual track. So, make sure you’re listening to how the vocals sound with the rest of the music. - Be subtle. Small adjustments can make a big difference.
