On August 22, 2025, 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee who had fled her home because of the war, was fatally stabbed aboard the Lynx Blue Line light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina. Surveillance video shows that she boarded the train and sat in front of the suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr., who then randomly attacked her without any prior interaction. Decarlos is said to be schizophrenic. Because of this he will probably be behind bars for the rest of his life - maybe not in a prison but in some sort of mental health facility.
