You may notice an increased police presence on beaches in Niagara and Norfolk County where many students are expected to gather for the annual tradition known as "Beach Day" Kudos to whoever is going swimming today because the water is freezing, but the water will be perfect. High school students are still expected to be in class, but many skip to enjoy the day in the sun. Police are also going to be out in full force and are reminding students to make responsible choices. Inflatable water toys, Frisbee, building sand castles, and water gun fights are all safe behaviour, but fighting can get you a $300 fine. Having open alcohol in unauthorized places carries a $125 fine. The event draws in large crowds year after year at popular beaches in St. Catharines, Crystal Beach in Fort Erie and Long Point, Turkey Point and Port Dover in Norfolk County. So of course having fun is always the goal, but police say the laws will be strictly enforced during this period.
