What The Budget Equestrian says

if you have horses you need a first aid kit and I'm not really sure if you heard me you must have a first aid kit in your barn if you have a horse no exceptions and you might be wondering why do I stress the importance of a first aid kit or you might even be wondering well I have a horse but I don't know what to put in my first aid kit but don't worry I going to explain all of that in today's video hello my equestrian friends it's me Lisa the budget equestrian welcome back to a new video and do you like my t-shirt do you see I'm representing this this is for Drifter hearts of Hope and this is the horse rescue where I got my two new horses and I keep telling you I'm going to tell you all about my horses but I thought it would be really important to talk about putting together a first aid kit now for me this was one of the most important things was to make sure my first aid kit was up to par before I brought my horses home and if you have horses you know are emergencies happen and the vet isn't like a minute down the street usually it takes a little bit of time for the vet to get out to your barn or wherever your horse is kept at so it's really important to have a first aid kit to be prepared for emergencies when they happen and I can't say if they happen because if you have a horse you are guaranteed that you're going to have an emergency where it would be really beneficial for you to have your own first aid kit and know how to use everything inside of it I promise if you have a horse and you haven't had an emergency yet you will and you need to be able to handle any emergency situation that comes up until your vet gets out to your horse and you might be wondering what Mak makes me an expert when it comes to first aid for horses I'm not a vet and I'm not a Vette Tech but I am a registered nurse for people and I also have advanced certifications in advanced wound care for people and believe it or not emergencies with people and horses they're emergencies so when an emergency happens whether it's a person or a horse it really is in your best interest to be prepared ahead of time so that way you are familiar with all of the different aspects of a first aid kit in case of an emergency and being prepared to handle an emergency with your horse is something that all horse owners should know how to handle and let's face it horses are horses right it seems like they walk around every single day saying what could I hurt myself on today at least that's what it seems like to me so it's really important for you as a horse owner to be prepared preped for an emergency with your horse it's also really important for you to know how to do tasks with your horse things such as checking his temperature checking his heart rate checking his respirations and even listening to gut Sounds by practicing this and doing it on a regular basis when an emergency happens you'll know what to do and your horse isn't going to be surprised when you go around to his backside and put a thermometer up his butt because you need to check his temperature if you've never checked a horse's temperature before yes you put a thermometer up their rear end to check their temperature you can't use the forehead thermometers to check their temperature I mean you could but you're not going to get an accurate reading so you really need to learn how to check your horse's temperature and I'm going to show you how to do that in this video keeping our horses safe that should be one of our number one priorities when it comes to being a horse owner and in order to do this we really need to have a complete and thorough first aid kit for our horses you can buy prepackaged first aid kits for either people or for horses but it's been my experience that if you actually create your own first aid kit you're going to know exactly what's inside of it because you bought everything to go inside and you'll know how to use it so I thought it would be really fun for me to show you the extensive first aid kits that I have for my horses and actually this first aid kit was at one time a a I think it was it held a DeWalt saw I think that's what it was but I turned it into a first aid kit and I believe I actually have a video showing you how I made this first aid kit so let me show you what is in this one this is like my go-to grabbing kit for when I'm in the barn with the horses and something happens okay so this is like my tiny first aid kit or my assessment kit so this has the basics in it that I'm going to need for if something happens with my horses first off so I keep some horse treats in there and this is where my tools live so my thermometers and of course some hand wipes because you never know when you might need those I also have a notepad and there's a pen for my notepad so that way if I need to write anything down for my vet temperature respirations gut sounds and anything I can write everything down and I don't have to try to remember it now with the thermometers it's really important to remember when you're checking a horse's temperature you do it rectly so one thing you got to keep in mind when you are inserting this into your horse's rectum it really is beneficial to have some type of a cord on the end of the thermometer that you can hold on to because you don't want your horse sucking this into their rectum and then you have another problem so having a thermometer on a cord is very very beneficial so I have this one with a cord you'll also want to check your batteries occasionally just to make sure your tools are all working so yep it's working now this is a nice thermometer because it's flexible so if you have a horse that's not really too keen on getting his temperature taken that might be nice the only bad thing about that it does not have a cord so you don't want to insert this into your horse's rear end and then leave it alone because there is a possibility that it could just get sucked in so if you're using a thermometer without a cord don't leave it unattended make sure you have a hand on it at all times so it doesn't disappear this is also the compartment where I keep my medications so this is air power I have some electrolyte paste and some banamine from my vet do have a 30 C syringe along with some different medical tapes a fancy heavy duty hoof pick as well as a couple of pair of scissors now my scissors that I like to use are different than a lot of people that I see in their first aid kit you can use regular scissors but what's really nice with either of these style of scissors is this little extra guy right here so what this does is when you're cutting bandages and stuff it protects so you're not going to inadvertently cut your horse so if you just go in digging for doing a dressing change or cutting something if it doesn't have that tip on it you could totally cut your horse you don't want that to happen because then he's going to freak out so with these type of scissors you don't have to worry because that longer end will protect it from being cut too deep so these these are an EMT shears they're pretty affordable those are a little stiff and then these are called Lis bandage shears and these are tiny in my opinion I use a lot bigger pair and I'll show those to you in just a few minutes I have a little emergency this is actually a bucket strap but it works really well as an emergency lead I have some hand sanitizer and I even have some petroleum jelly Yep this is Vaseline so when you are checking your horse's temperature it really helps to have a lubricant the Vaseline acts as a lubricant and I find it easier to use the Vaseline in a container like this versus the ones that are in like the tub because then you got to dig out the Vaseline and wipe it all over no with this you can just squirt a little bit onto your hand put it around the end of the thermometer insert it and you're good to go then you don't have to worry that your Vaseline is going to leak out all over the place in your first aid kit which I have had happen before so having Vaseline in like a squeezy tube with a lid like that is the best that I found and I have heard people say that you know having a stethoscope for a horse isn't necessarily a necessity I I beg to differ I totally disagree with that statement I think having a stethoscope as a part of your first aid kit is very important they have different styles I actually have some tape on mine because it works really well to hold your tape close by but you can listen to your horse's heart rate you can listen for gut sounds with a stethoscope it's not hard to do it's really easy and these are really affordable so for less than $10 you have an awesome tool that you will use on your horse and I really think everybody should have a stethoscope in their first aid kit something else your first aid kit really needs to have is a flashlight so oo little flashlight little baby flashlight heavy duty and then I also have headlamp a lot of times when you're dealing with horses you need two hands and if you have a flashlight in one hand you've only got one hand so by using a headlamp you can actually Focus the light where you want it to go and you still have two hands so definitely helpful for having hands for having a handfree light source this is awesome and I do have like this is like a stiff brush it's just nylon bristle you never know when you might need it so that goes in my first aid kit as well like I I said this is kind of my assessment kit and this is like the beginning of my first aid kits and when I'm assessing my horse or assessing you know what's going on during emergency that is the kit that I always take now I also have a pretty extensive first aid kit for people too and this kit does not live out here in the barn but I just wanted to show you I mean a lot of the things that are in my first aid kit for people are the same type of things that I have in my first aid kit in my barn but when it comes to being prepared for basically any type of emergency that can happen I mean redundancies are great because if a horse gets hurt or even a person for that matter in an emergency you need to have the stuff that you need to have now you can't say okay just wait here for about 15 20 minutes I'm going to run to Walmart and go buy some more gauze no sometimes you have to make do with what you have so by having these different first aid kits and having everything ready to go in them if something happen happens you're going to be prepared because you have the redundancies it's important okay so I showed you my little first aid kit like my assessment kit basically but now I really want to show you my massive ultimate first aid kit for My Horses okay so this is my awesome massive first aid kit this thing is so incredible and I actually have put everything together in this first a kit every single piece that is in here is something that I know that I'll need to use and hopefully I'll never need to use it but the chances are pretty high that I will need to use something in this kit at one time or another and this is not actually a first aid kit no this is actually a husky rolling toolbox and I actually found this at Home Depot several years ago gosh I bet it's probably been seven or eight years but I know they still have kits like this and these make incredible first a kits but the biggest thing is I didn't want this to look like a toolbox so I gave it a coat of white paint to make it stand out anyone that sees this in my barn is going to know that this is where the first aid supplies are especially since I added these different red crosses on each compartment the paint is just white spray paint and the red crosses is just permanent vinyl that I have for my Cricut Machine but because of those little extras that I did it's pretty clear that this is for first aid right now the best part about this kit is that it is 100% portable since it's a rolling toolbox it has a handle which makes it literally just like one of those rolling suitcases I can take this thing anywhere it is completely portable but what is also really nice is that these compartments hooked together so this way I have separate first aid kits yeah it's still black on the bottom that I can take with me if I just need a certain part of the kit so for example this little top guy let's go ahead and reconnect him and I'm going to show you what's inside so I'm not sure if you can see this or not but the most important thing is I have the emergency numbers listed here I have my vet my faer I have my cell number and my husband's cell number just in case something happened and somebody was here here helping my horses and I wasn't here to take care of them but let me show you some of the things that I have in this top compartment of my first a kit so I have a couple of 30ml or 30 cc syringes those are great if you have to flush a wound I have a horse's weight tape or measurement tape there's some iodine swabs some little alcohol swabs for people I also have some bulky gauze I have different sizes of coband or vet wrap and then I also have little 2in conform gauze so this is the big bulky gauze versus the thinner gauze so it just depends on what kind of a wound or injury that you're treating that's going to determine what kind of gauze that you're going to be using so this is just a lot of gauze and you know Basics and then I have some smaller syringes I have some huge long Q-tips I have a teeny tiny first aid kit with some hand sanitizer some tape alcohol swabs and I also have a a package of wet wipes in here gauze more coband these are some like giant wipes which you're nice to have and then some Chucks or puppy pea pads depending again what kind of an emergency you're working with you may need to keep something clean and actually these work really good if you have a very very heavily draining wound you can actually use this for a bandage as well oh and I also have a pair of tweezers or pickups and those are some really nice sutures scissors and this is actually sterile so if I needed something to be sterile this is sterile most of the stuff in here as long as it's packaged it is sterile but once you open it it is not sterile anymore I've heard people say sterile sterile sterile I would just assume all of this is not sterile and it is clean there's not too many instances when you're going to be needing to use something sterile unless you're putting it inside of your horse so as long as the items in your first aid kit are clean that is what you need clean is good all right now that I have destroyed the first level my first day kit to show you what is inside let's move on to the second level I can actually disconnect it from the toolbox itself and then we have another level now I really like this one this one is really nice it has a handle as well so I can put a lot of really fun stuff in into this one you could even actually just make a first aid kit with just this component itself it has heavy duty Clips to keep it shut and then this is where I have a lot of dressing supplies I have gloves these are Nitro gloves they work really well uh ABD pads zero form gauze zeror gauze this stuff is really nice because if you have a wound that you need to do a lot of dressing changes on this is actually like petroleum soaked gauze I'm going to open one so you can see but this is sterile until I open it but again once it's open this is no longer sterile so if you are trying to keep stuff sterile you have to be careful when you open it and not touch it because if you touch the inside of this packaging guess what it's not sterile anymore but this stuff is so okay number one it's really messy but it's really cool if you have a wound that could potentially you know it's going to stop bleeding or you have sutures or stitches you have to cover up this you put it onto the area that you want it to go on and because of the stuff the medicine that's in the gauze itself it will not stick now if you leave this in place for like a week or so the blood dries out the wound gets all dry yeah potentially this could stick but if you're changing dressings every single day this stuff is awesome and it will not stick to the wound now I need a paper towel to wipe all that off my hands so this stuff is really nice I have lots of it because it's pretty useful and this stuff expires in 2025 it has an expiration date you know even if it does go past the expiration date in my barn if I was in an emergency situation and I didn't have anything else I'm I'm going to use it even if it is expired but I also have some transparent dressings which those are nice um they're nice for people I could potentially see a use for horses as well said ABD pads transparent dressings I have some specialty dressings with like medications on them so if there's heavily draining wounds again you can put a specialty dressing on and keep it nice and clean and underneath all of the dressings I actually have oh I actually have some stering drapes too so if you need to keep an area clean that you're working on or your vet does these are really nice to have I wouldn't necessarily say sterile but definitely keep it clean these are helpful I have lots of gauze this is 4x4 gauze pads there's different brands I have Band-Aid I have woven gauze you can never have enough gauze for horses or for people now that was sterile gauze now this is clean gauze so this is packaged so it is clean it is not stick sterile a lot of the different things will tell you if it is clean or it's sterile if you buy gauze like this which I really encourage you to do for your first aid kit because if you need gauze you're usually going to need a lot of it and it's cheaper to buy it this way but this is clean not sterile and on each level of my first aid kit I do have hand sanitizer as just in case I have lots of different sizes of Ace wraps and you'll notice my Ace wraps are all unwrapped that's because if I need to use it in an emergency I don't want to have to mess with the packaging I just want to be able to wrap and go I have some knit bandages like leg bandages for horses you have a hoof pick because again redundancy two is one and one is none I have different um cotton paddings like rolled cotton I think this is 3 in this is 4 in and what 2 in again lots of vet wrap again bulky gauze this is 4 and A2 inch this is conform gauze this makes really nice dressings smaller dressings for people or animals this is 3 in so 4 and 1 half 3 in different types of gauze now both of these are sterile until it's open once it's open it's just clean I can't stress that enough and then under all of my Ace wraps I just have Dollar Tree Dollar Store towels these are really nice you'll need lots of towels if you have an emergency with an animal um I do have a couple of pair of sterile gloves this is a complete process itself of putting sterile gloves on versus like just clean gloves and I don't want to waste my gloves and show you how to do that so I'm not going to some of the other things this is really awesome this is chlorexidine solution this is basically like rubbing alcohol chlorexidine is an antiseptic and I have witch hazel and 70% isopropyl alcohol so now I showed you everything that was in the second layer of my first aid kit but I need to make sure I get everything wrapped back up and put away so that it is ready to be used in case I need to use it I'll tell you what if you don't have your stuff in your first aid kit and an emergency it sucks and it may not end up being packed exactly like it was when I started but again that's why it's important to know what you have in each layer of your first aid kit each level if you have one like this so you know where everything is because the worst thing that you can do is be in the middle of the emergency and you don't know where anything is so knowing what's in your first aid kit or where the stuff is if you have different first aid kits is really important that was the second layer of the awesome ultimate first aid kit so now we're going to go to the bottom layer and yes this is the bottom layer of my first aid kit again a a lot of redundancy see I have more bandages for H's legs this is where I do keep a lot of extra things that I may need I have a staple remover some just extra like towels more gauze again clean gauze not sterile saline solution in a bottle like this this is sterile while it is inside of here but once it comes out obviously it's not so the big difference between clean and sterile sterile is meaning everything has been removed so there is nothing nothing has touched it it's completely like I guess virgin to the outside world but again when you're dealing with horses and a barn clean is is the way to go and you can't really worry if something is sterile or not let your vet worry about that I do have some cotton balls and I have a big roll of cotton now at one time this was still however it got a tear in it so this is no longer sterile this is just considered clean but it's still usable for sure and down in the bottom this is where I have all of like the little extras so the the wound gels and things like that now wonder dust this is an excellent excellent addition to your first aid kit it is a coagulant so if you have a horse that cut himself pretty severely you can sprinkle a little bit of the Wonder dust on it and it will help it to coagulate Corona ointment this stuff is awesome I use this all the time on my horses especially where they had their freeze Brands I put a little bit of the Corona ointment on it and it's just really good for their skin very good wound ointment this stuff is really cool this is banic It's a wound fungus scratches rain rot ringworm hot spots like wound spray this stuff is pretty cool you can find it online I really really like that and I have some wound coat I actually have two cans of wound coat but obviously I've used this one so uh it does not have the lid on it because I can't find it but this is awesome it's an antiseptic it works really good on wounds when a horse or cow even gets a fresh cut it really does help a lot I have a box of nital gloves in here as well oh this one is really fine so as a Moon care nurse we use honey and silver all the time in wounds like people with diabetic foot wounds and non-healing wounds chronic wounds but I found this and this is silver honey and it's a spray that is for horses this stuff is so cool thankfully I have not had to use it yet but if I do I very happy that I have it and aloe vera gel that's nice for little insect stings or burn and stuff for you or your horse this is a skin balm by fol some flyid paste fly repellent this is really good if your horse has a wound and you have to cover it up you don't want the Flies to get into it and you can use this on both dogs and horses also have a bottle of absorbing linament this stuff is wonderful and then some mineral ice as well and some tiny little saline bullets so if you needed to wash something out of an eye this stuff works really this size is really good for that I have some hypix tape which is great for making a bandage more for people not so much for horses but if you need tape like a fabric St type tape this is awesome because you can make the tape as long as you need it to be and it's great I actually have an adhesive sensitivity so I can't handle Band-Aids and stuff but I can handle hypop fix tape on my skin all right again that is pretty much the wound care portion of my first day kit so now let's put everything back because I got to make sure I know where everything is then I can just put the components back together and it is ready to rock and roll now in case you want to try out any of the first aid supplies that I talked about that I have in my first a kit I have left links in the description box below that way you can check them out for yourself if you saw something you're like oo I really want to try that you can try it for yourself I don't think you'll be disappointed with any of these products they work really well and you can never have too many first aid supplies trust me you can never have too many first aid supplies for yourself or for your barn and they're Dual Purpose you can use them for horses or people so I call that a win so as I promised I am going to grab Timone and I'm going to show you how to do things that you should know how to do for your horse like take his temperature check his respirations check his pulse and listen for gut sounds these are all basic skills that every horse owner should know how to do for themselves so let's go get toone and let's check some vital okay I think he's being camera shy but this is my horse Timone and he is the riding horse that I got from Drifter hearts of Hope oh he's saying hello he's a very very sweet boy like I was telling you he has a freeze brand that's what this is right here so I just put some Corona ointment on it and it doesn't hurt him but it is getting dry so the Corona ointment really helps with that and Timone is going to be our very willing participant our model for getting his vitals checked so we're going to start with his heart rate and again having a stethoscope is not not I don't think that's Overkill I think it's really important to have a stethoscope for your horse and to listen to his heartbeat I'm going to go right under his shoulder so right in here right there and listen for his heart on average a hores heartbeat is about 28 to 42 beats per minute so keep that in mind you can use a stopwatch you can use a regular watch you can use your phone to time it I have a handy dandy little Apple watch and it actually has a stopwatch option on it right there so once I hit start I can time how long I'm going to have the stopwatch going so I'm actually going to do this for 30 seconds they say you can do it for 15 seconds but I think to get a more accurate number you need to do it for at least 30 and then you can multiply that by two or you can do it for a full minute if your horse is you know okay with that so this this is something good for you to work on with your horse so in case of an emergency number one you know how to check his heart rate and do all of his vital signs but also to help your vet so you can figure out what's going on and it's also good just to know what your horse's normal vital signs are so we are going to start with his heart rate again checking it right under his shoulder because that's where you listen to his heart so I'm going to start my stopwatch and listen for 30 seconds it's pretty awesome if you have never listened to your horse's heartbeat I highly encourage you to to do it it's pretty cool all right so I found his heart so now I'm going to time it so I listened to it for a full 30 seconds and I came up with 20 so that means his heart rate is right now at this moment 40 beats per minute which is pretty normal and he is within the normal range for a horse's heartbeat so again that is where you listen for their heartbeat it is so cool you got to do it another thing you can do with your stethoscope your handy dandy stethoscope is listen for gut sounds so when you're listening for the gut sounds you want to listen in the four quadrant so you start with the upper then you go to the lower on this side then you repeat the process on the other side as well and what you're listening for is the gurgling in their bowels that shows that everything's working so let's listen for gut sound I wish I could like amplify this so you could hear it because it's pretty cool and now I'm going to go to the other side and his guts are working very well he's got gut sounds in all four quadrants and he's passing gas how cool is that it's like he did that on purpose so now I want to listen to his respirations there's different ways that you can do this you can watch their side as it rises and Falls that is considered one respiration you can look at their nostrils watch their nostrils flare or you can listen with your stethoscope in this area in his traia and you can hear him taking the breath so when he breathes in inhalation and breathes out exhales that's considered one breath sound again 8 to 12 respirations is considered normal so you can do your stopwatch you didn't help me thank you reset it to zero and we're going to listen I find that's the most accurate way and his breath sounds were at 10 taking five and multiplying it by two because five for 30 seconds gives me 10 breath sounds that's pretty average good job buddy so now we got one more thing to check and that's the temperature this should be fine now again when you're checking your horse's temperature you really want to make sure that he is comfortable with you working on his back side and the thermometer that I like to use it does have a string on it just as a precaution because I don't don't want to lose the thermometer in his rectum rectum damn near killed them so it's pretty easy you're just going to take some lubricant and you're going to put it on to the thermometer itself so I'm going to take a little bit of the petroleum jelly like so and I'm just going to put that on the end of the thermometer the end is what's going to be going in the you know where then I'm going to move his tail to the side and we're going to check his temperature so you just want to be gentle and I'm actually going to hold on to the thermometer because I don't want it to disappear and It beeped I'm going to gently remove the thermometer and 99
