I just received my M1 Ultra Mac Studio with 128GB of unified memory, 64 Core GPU, and 4TB SSD. Many have asked, how well does this computer perform for 3D and CGI work? In this video, I'll dive into my experience using the brand new Apple M1 Ultra Mac Studio with Cinema 4D and Redshift. IMPORTANT UPDATE 5-8-22: Just thought I'd follow up from my Youtube video and let you guys know that after playing with some Redshift settings, I've been able to significantly speed up render times on the M1 Ultra Mac Studio since making this video. As I mention in the video, I make my living as a commercial photographer and digital artist. I've recently been getting into CGI and I'm still learning Redshift, but after lowering the bucket quality from the default "Medium" setting to "Low" and adding a bit of denoising, I was able to get the hero shot of the desk scene that I built from a 20 minute render down to a 6 minute render. The overhead desk scene shot went from 6 minutes and 46 seconds to just 3 minute and 41 seconds. You can't see any difference in render quality until you zoom in maybe 200%-300% in Photoshop and look at them side by side. The "low" bucket quality version still looks really good. Furthermore, the School of Motion scene that I rendered is also rendering in 4 minutes and 18 seconds now instead of 9 minutes. And the Greyscale Gorilla animation that I originally rendered in 10 hours finished in just 2 hours and 55 minutes. Again, I'm still learning Redshift and all of it's idiosyncrasies, so I'm sure there's more optimal settings that would provide the right mix of quality and render speed. If anyone has suggestions on this, please feel free to leave a comment below the video. IMPORTANT UPDATE 2-1-23 After using Redshift with the Mac Studio for almost a year now. I have found that a custom bucket setting with a threshold of .05 seems to be the sweet spot for quality renders with reasonably fast rendering speeds. There have been some issues along with the way with glitchy renders and crashes which seems to stem from the "Auto Memory Management." setting. I've been in contact with Maxon support regarding these issues. I've been told that the developers are aware and are working on getting them fixed. Auto Memory Management is turned on by default and is key to getting quick renders, so I recommend keeping this turned on and re-rendering scenes when necessary.
