What is Universalism: Ruth Kemna

198 views· 3 likes· 15:22· May 9, 2026

This recording by composer and violist Ruth Kemna emerged from a live musical experiment created during the interview marathon accompanying the conversations collected in this book. Before the event, each speaker was invited to respond to the question “What is universalism?” on a hand-drawn musical staff. These handwritten pages became scores: visual, linguistic, and emotional traces translated by Kemna into miniature musical compositions for viola. Performed live before each conversation, the pieces functioned as preludes, leitmotifs, and sonic reflections — encounters between language, notation, listening, and sound. This video presents the live recording of these interpretations. The scores reproduced in the book are also invitations: to read musically, to listen differently, and to imagine new ways of thinking about universalism today.
