Like you, I'm picking up a package of bees this spring, but it's been delayed! It's not an easy year to become a beekeeper – there's record high colony losses, mite counts are greater than usual (according to the apiaries selling packages) and unseasonably cold weather in southern states has delayed packages going north. How can we help our bees grow so they are ready for summer? In this video I talk about how to manage space WITHIN a box so the bees can conserve energy, build honeycomb and grow in population. One way we do this is with a follower board. I'll show you how to use this tool so you can easily manage the space in your box. I'll also discuss using a nuc box as an alternative, feeding bees in the early spring and checker boarding. Then, we'll talk about treating for varroa mites in the early spring.
