To achieve this, it uses a 5um diamond tip and a sensor that can sense very small movements. After you get the data, there are many methods of calculating the final roughness number and this device has options to do it in many different standards. It can also display a surface profile graph of the surface that it measured. Something like this is typically used for making sure the manufactured machined part is to a certain roughness standard or range. Depending on what is needed on the application of the part, the requirements can vary widely.
