We hiked the SMALLEST Wainwright in the Lake District National Park. Despite being the only 'mountain' under 1,000ft, it still features in the main 214 Alfred Wainwright list of Lakeland Fells. We love hiking in the lake district, especially the more centrally located areas surrounded by mountains and the magnificent views they provide. The smallest Wainwright is Castle Crag at 290m / 950ft. I can see why it's in the Wainwright Guides, it's a proper standalone mini-mountain in the North Western Fells (although fairly centrally located). Our route started by the Ladore Falls Hotel (my gps route starts Borrowdale Hotel!). From there we walked through Grange and ascended Castle Crag. We descended into Rosthwaite and stopped for a beer. We hiked up to Grange Fell and then descended into Borrowdale. In summary, Castle Crag is a cracking little tester, we highly recommend it!
