In this video I’m in Studio One 7 (I think 7.2.4) and I’m giving y’all a FREE vocal template that’s built on stock plugins for beginners — with one exception: Auto-Tune. Studio One don’t have pitch correction to my knowledge, so I’m running Auto-Tune on the input with my settings for this beat (A minor), and I’m printing that while I record. Right after that I throw a gate on the input so it’s cutting background noise and I’m getting a clean signal from the jump. Then I walk through the whole chain: a little Red Light District distortion to make the vocal pop if you don’t have a preamp, Pro EQ cuts plus a little air boost around 12k, a Studio One compressor mostly for level so I don’t have to record super loud, and a de-esser to clamp down on harsh S’s. I also show my ad-lib EQ “telephone box” vibe, plus chorus options you can toggle to taste. For sauce, I’m using analog delays (half note and slap), Open Air with the Vocal Booth IR, and a 3D hall reverb (Village Chapel) because it just sounds good. On the master, I use a compressor basically like a limiter so I can hear the session louder without peaking — only like 1–2 dB of gain reduction at the loudest parts.
