Join us as we travel from the town of Banyuwangi, all the way to the capital city of Jakarta by train. Over several days, we crossed the entire island of Java, witnessing the changing landscapes, bustling local stations, and the incredible rhythm of Indonesian train travel. Starting our journey at the tip of East Java, we navigated multiple train lines, connecting through historic cities and rolling rice paddies to complete one of the ultimate overland journeys in Southeast Asia. From the comfort of the Executive class to the authentic energy of local rail, this is the best way to see the heart of Java. Throughout the trip, we experienced the legendary hospitality of KAI (Kereta Api Indonesia), tasted local station food, and watched the sunset from our window as we traversed hundreds of kilometers toward the big city. About This Video

We’ve been travelling around Java for over a month, and in this episode we finally show the “in-between” part that gets us to all those epic spots: the trains. We start right at the eastern tip in Banyuwangi and slowly work our way across the whole island to Jakarta—five trains, 1,031km, and a bunch of station snacks along the way. It’s our first proper train experience in Indonesia, so we’re figuring it out in real time: finding the right platform, dealing with luggage racks that are way too narrow for our backpacks, and celebrating the small wins like air-con and comfy seats. We ride everything from cheaper tickets (our first one was 160,000 IDR) to super comfortable carriages where the seats curve so you can actually sleep. We taste-test train food (meatball fried rice and coffee), do the all-important toilet reviews (some of the nicest bathrooms I’ve seen in Indonesia, not even joking), and watch the landscapes shift from endless rice fields to mountain views and then straight into Jakarta’s skyscraper chaos. Biggest takeaway: Java by train is genuinely easy, on time, and way better than people make it sound—book direct on the KAI website if you want the best deals.
