The Top Broke Off...On Purpose! Meet The Shear Lag

The trick, was that the Corten had to be attached to an OSB substrate, so hot rivets could not be used. And and any other option I found was either aluminum or stainless and the client wanted the rivet to rust like the Corten and he also wanted the round domed head look. That led me to create my own fastener out of mild steel that could be driven in cold leaving behind a domed head that would rust. And so the birth of the shear lag became a reality. I have since used them in a couple other projects and have sold a few to people interested using them in their projects. I made a couple minor adjustments to the original design so they have a bit more strength below the nut head so they don't snap off as easily as before.
