Peveril Gardens & studios: Carlos Sanchez, Sanchez Benton

Carlos Sanchez, co-director of Sanchez Benton, describes their project for Peveril Gardens, which resourcefully reinterprets an underused set of parking garages facing a busy roundabout on the Old Kent Road, as a new public roof garden and artist studios. The project grew from an invited competition for an art commission led by Southwark Council, and was developed in collaboration with artist Gabriel Kuri. The outcome is a new publicly accessible raised garden, alongside artist studios and a cafe space at ground level, which will host residencies and support emerging local talent. A CENTURY OF THE ARTIST'S STUDIO This lecture forms part of a new series exploring the rich typology of the artist's studio and the challenges of delivering studio provision today. The series has been developed in partnership with the Whitechapel Gallery to coincide with their current exhibition ‘A Century of the Artist’s Studio 1920 – 2020’ which runs until 29 May 2022.
