Black farmers are losing land at an alarming rate in the United States. Hearing the struggles of Black farmers in North Carolina during the pandemic prompted the founders of Tall Grass Food Box to ask themselves, “ What is our role in their sustainability?” Derrick Beasley, Gabrielle Carter, and Gerald Harris came together to aggregate food and produce from Black farmers across North Carolina in a community-supported agriculture (or CSA) food box, with one-off or seasonal subscription purchasing options. With an immediate, positive response from the community following the launch of the project, the demand for more infrastructure to make this collaborative effort long-term grew significantly. Through fiscal sponsorship and the help of The Bulls of Durham, they have been able to secure a refrigerated truck to transport produce for local pick-up and expand their service area throughout the Triangle. Tall Grass Food Box has created an entry point for people of all ages to grow their relationship with their local food system, an entrepreneurial pursuit in food sovereignty.
