This is from a previous Patreon video. For the most current tutorials, please visit https://www.patreon.com/andreanelson Value in art is just how light or dark a color is. There is absolutely nothing that will improve your art like understanding value. The more contrast you can get, the more impact your painting will have! In watercolor, we can change the value of a color simply by adding water. So in this exercise, we go through the steps of creating a value scale using two different techniques. I promise it's painless. The next important thing to note is that we work from light to dark in watercolor. In order to maintain light areas, you have to paint around them. This lesson will walk you through how to do exactly that. We will work from a reference photo that I found on Unsplash, which is a free to use site. https://unsplash.com/photos/an-avocado-cut-in-half-on-a-white-surface-9TxV0sCTXJ8 This link will take you to that photo, which is in color, but in the tutorial, we will be using the photo in black and white. I did this using the picture editing tools on my phone. Using a black and white photo is super helpful in determining values, and it's a trick I use a lot when painting. Supplies are on my Website athttps://www.cozylark.com/ but any supplies will work! 24 color essential palette but you only need one color!
