How do you sew decorative stitches on lightweight fabric without puckering?

On my pink linen-look fabric, every decorative stitch wanted to pucker because it’s more fluid than my toile cotton. I tried tissue paper underneath and on top, and even a thin strip of interfacing behind the stitch line, but none of that fixed it. What finally stabilised it properly was a wash-away embroidery stabiliser used in thin strips under my marked stitch lines.

Why did my wash-away stabiliser leave a stiff, glue-like residue after drying?

This is exactly what freaked me out—my first hand-washed test looked perfect wet, then dried almost like plastic with a shiny, gluey feel on the back. In my case, I don’t think I washed it out thoroughly enough by hand (water not hot enough, not enough detergent). When I re-tested in the washing machine with warm water and detergent, it came out soft again with no stiff residue.

Should I wash out stabiliser before assembling a dress or after it’s finished?

I’m still deciding, because this is a new project style for me and I’d genuinely love opinions. I’ve got the bodice, sleeves and skirt panels sewn as separate components (French seams), and it’s definitely easier to add the stitching while they’re flat. The question now is whether to wash each piece individually for safety, or wait and wash the whole dress at the end.

How did you alter the McCall’s shirt dress pattern for this embroidered look?

I removed the gathered front yoke and drafted a clean, simple front bodice with no darts, then kept the gathered back yoke for a bit of extra ease. I also reshaped the sleeve to suit the armscye better, lowered the neckline (it was far too high on my first toile), and lengthened the waist. For fit, I did an FBA without darts so it’s roomier through the bust without losing that relaxed shirt-dress vibe.

How do you get decorative stitch rows to match across seams and sleeves?

I’m treating the stitch rows like stripes, so the goal is for them to line up around the body and continue neatly onto the sleeves. Because I don’t have side-seam darts, I can measure down from the underarm and draw guidelines to keep the spacing consistent. It’s a lot of planning, but it makes the finished look feel really intentional.

What stitches did you choose for your machine-embroidered dress?

I played around loads on my toile and ended up choosing a dotted/diamond-style stitch, an open scallop, and a full scallop satin stitch. The scallop is the one I really wanted to keep because it’s so pretty—but it’s also the one that was most prone to puckering. I’ve still got other stitches I might introduce further down the skirt once I’ve got the process nailed.

What fabric are you using for the BRORA-inspired embroidered dress dupe?

I found a bright pink, lightweight linen-look blend in the Abakhan remnant section—2.5 metres, which felt like a perfect find. It was inexpensive because Abakhan price remnants by weight, but it also means there’s no room for error. Once it’s cut, it’s cut—so I’m being very careful with testing and stabilising.

What trims and thread colours are you using for the dress?

Instead of copying the original orange embroidery, I’m using green thread because I already had four or five bobbins in the exact shade. I’m also planning to use a green ladder lace insert that my mum picked up on a bargain hunt, plus a green grosgrain ribbon and a perfectly matched ribbon from Boyes. I’ve got extra pink trims too, but I’m trying not to throw everything at it and make it look too busy.
