In this video, I walk through 7 practical tips (plus a bonus) to make your password manager setup as secure as possible—no matter which password manager you use. I’m using Proton Pass as the example, but everything here applies to 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, and others. We start with the foundation: protecting the password manager itself with a unique master password (think long passphrase, not “complex” nonsense), smart auto-lock settings, and—if you’re in the Proton ecosystem—making sure your Proton Pass password is separate from your Proton Mail password. From there I cover the stuff most people skip: emergency access and recovery planning, migrating “slowly” so you don’t get overwhelmed by hundreds of logins, and storing security questions the right way (hint: answer them incorrectly and save the answers in your vault). I also break down my decision tree for storing 2FA codes—when it’s fine to keep them in your password manager and when you should separate them. Then we get into email aliases for an extra variable in your security stack, and breach monitoring to spot exposed logins. Bonus: I show how identity management inside a vault can be a game-changer for storing documents like passports or insurance info when you need them fast.
