Encountering the Public while Piloting a Drone – A Covid-19 Quarantine Mindset

When someone approaches you while flying a drone they could be curious, angry, criminal or, well, insane. There’s no way to be sure in the moment but I make my best assessment and go with it. Don’t worry about me, I’m always prepared for the worst, but of course hope for the best. This particular encounter shifted my mindset a bit, likely due to the Corona virus- Covid-19 intrusion of 2020. Restricted movements, closed restaurants, bars, shopping and all “non-essential business, not to mention the “social distancing” requirements. Quarantined, ouch. It’s weird, I felt guilty, almost dirty standing next to people that I wouldn’t have given a second thought to a few short days ago. So expecting a solitary morning of pics and videos from the DJI Mavic and my wonderful Sony a6400 I set out for a “win” of lighting and subject matter. The act of getting the pictures was never as important as the results themselves, almost like a necessary evil. But this day felt different. Maybe it was the required isolation, I don’t know, but the footage seemed almost irrelevant somehow, well almost. The process seemed significantly more poignant than before, almost surreal. Maybe I’ve went insane during the “lockdown”… Does a crazy person think they’re crazy? Huh.
