The New Toyota Camry: Hybrid Only! But Is It an Upgrade?

Let’s test drive and review the new 2025 Toyota Camry Hybrid XSE! This model is hybrid-only, and that’s a great thing, because it’s an easy introduction to battery power. The Toyota Camry is now in its 9th generation, and for the first time ever, it’s hybrid-only. That’s a huge deal, because Toyota Camry is safe. It’s easy. It’s logical. For a lot of car buyers, it doesn’t require a lot of thought — its Toyota maintenance and reliability, decent performance, and innocuous looks are enough. That’s why 300,000 Americans buy one every year. The 2025 Camry comes in four trims: the LE, which starts at $28,700 American dollars; the $31,000 SE; the $33,700 XLE; and the $34,900 XSE. Every trim comes standard with front-wheel drive (FWD) and 225 horsepower, while all-wheel drive (AWD) with 232 horsepower is about $1,500 extra.  The cars get between 44 and 51 miles per gallon combined, depending on the trim and drive layout you choose. In general, front-wheel drive gets better fuel mileage than all-wheel drive, and in the Camry, the lowest-price LE trims get better fuel economy than the more expensive ones. The car we drive in this video is the Toyota Camry XSE, which means it’s the top trim. It has a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder engine and hybrid system that makes 225 combined horsepower, and that power goes to the front wheels, because this car doesn’t have the optional all-wheel drive. The Camry also isn’t a plug-in hybrid — this car charges while you drive. All-wheel-drive models send power to the rear wheels through a dedicated rear electric motor, which gives the car additional traction when you need it: bad weather, acceleration, and other traction-hungry situations. Hybrid Camrys (which is now all of them) also have limited “EV Mode” in low-speed situations.
