Ford Bronco Stroppe: Who Needs Roads?

Let’s test drive and review the 2025 Ford Bronco Stroppe (with the Sasquatch treatment)! And thanks to @homefieldapparel for sponsoring this video! I live in Texas, and I book the cars I review weeks in advance of them actually arriving. After I chose this Bronco Stroppe special edition, I was surprised to see that James May had the same one a few months ago. But I was even more surprised to see that he drove it on the highway, then said it sucked. That’s like taking a Corvette ZR1 to the Rubicon trail and being shocked that it didn’t go very far.  While I usually just do my own reviews, I thought James’ video was a fun opportunity to do some point-counterpoint discussion and talk about this hot-take approach with reviewing cars. Ford originally launched the Bronco in 1965 as a competitor to other utilitarian four-by-fours including the International Harvester Scout and Jeep CJ, a predecessor to the Wrangler. It had roots in military vehicles but was built for life on the road and off, with Ford’s advertisement of the first generation of the SUV saying it was "equally at home on rugged mountain grades or on a run to the shopping center." The first run of the Bronco lasted 31 years and five generations. Along the way, the model served as a Popemobile, weathered the oil crisis, and became a central figure in a very famous car chase. It also got a baby sibling aimed at the compact-SUV market, the Bronco II, which lasted about a decade and was based on the smaller Ford Ranger pickup. (The big Bronco was built on the F-150 platform at the time.) More than two decades after the big Bronco left the American car market in June 1996, Ford launched the new, sixth-generation Bronco SUV — an answer to not only the Jeep Wrangler, which has been somewhat lonely in the "hardcore off-roader" class for years, but also to a U.S. market that can't get enough crossovers and SUVs. Alongside it for sale came the Bronco Sport, a modern-day smaller sibling to the Bronco that also sends power to all four wheels. But unlike the big Bronco, which rides on the Ford Ranger midsize-pickup truck platform, the Bronco Sport shares one with the Escape crossover. I went to the official launch of the current Bronco in 2021 (which included a manual transmission!), and it was fascinating to watch the American automotive landscape change in real time. To have the Bronco re-enter the market was a big deal, because it offered buyers another option in the Jeep Wrangler’s arena.   The new big Bronco was also at the forefront of a new era of off-roaders and off-roader cosplay on the American car market, spurred by people wanting to get out and be — or at least feel — more adventurous after being stuck inside in the early 2020s. Since then, we’ve gotten more hardcore trims of the Bronco Sport, as well as unibody off-roaders like the Honda Passport Trailsport and off-road appearance packages on all kinds of otherwise normal cars. One of the coolest parts of the Bronco launch in 2021 was the hands-on off-roading and work with the vehicles, such as removing the roof panels for more open-air convertible driving. There was also a display of about 200 Ford-backed aftermarket build accessories available at launch, allowing customization of off-roaders, overlanding builds, and adventure conversion models. The 2025 Ford Bronco Stroppe in this videohas a 2.7-liter, twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine that makes 330 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. That power goes through a 10-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels. You can buy it for $78,000 MSRP, while the price of the current base model is right around $40,000. From there, you get all kinds of trim options: the Big Bend, Outer Banks, Badlands, Heritage, Raptor, and more.
