Choosing the right winter diving wetsuit or drysuit for Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane diving is essential for an enjoyable dive! In this video, Chris from ADRENO Scuba Diving Melbourne explains what type of wetsuit/drysuit is ideal for Melbourne winter diving, Sydney winter diving and Brisbane winter diving. In Melbourne winters, water temperatures drop to a chilly 9 degrees; this is from a nice 22 degrees in summer! Most scuba divers in Melbourne during winter favour the use of a drysuit: by far the most popular choice. To keep warm using a drysuit, you'll also require a thermal. Combining a drysuit with thermals result in a 100% dry and warm solution. Because of such a wide variation in water temperature between the Melbourne seasons, most scuba divers can't get away with a single suit to dive in for all seasons. If you must choose to wear a single suit all year round, Chris recommends his personal choice: a 7mm wetsuit with a thermal underneath for winter diving. While this is cold in winter, it allows Chris to get away with using a single wetsuit all year round. For winter scuba diving in Sydney, Chris recommends a 8x7mm wetsuit (otherwise known as a hybrid). An 8x7mm wetsuit provides an optimal level of warmth, where the wetsuit is 8mm thick through the body and 7mm thick hips and below. This type of suit allows you to maintain your core heat. Also, it's essential to dive with a hood in Syndey (and Melbourne) winters; many wetsuits feature an in-built hood. Scuba diving in Brisbane during winter is not as cold as Melbourne & Sydney. Nevertheless, a warm wetsuit is still essential! Chris recommends a 5mm wetsuit for Brisbane diving, and most other Queensland diving during winter. It provides the perfect level of warmth and flexibility for sub-tropical climates.
