Stop Shooting Boring White Backgrounds (Try This Instead) with Lindsay Adler

Are you tired of using plain, white backgrounds for your photos? In this video, I’ll show you three powerful lighting techniques that can completely transform a white seamless backdrop into something bold, cinematic, and creative. I regularly shoot on white (and gray) backgrounds, and I never find it boring! With the right lighting, a white background can take on various exciting looks. I’ll cover these three essential techniques: (1) Casting graphic shadows using an optical spot. We start with this simple, one light technique and learn how to shape the light by using the modifier’s leaves, lens focus, and our camera angle. (2) Transforming white into any color with gels and controlled light. I was through how to build the light intentionally for saturated results and how to avoid spill light that washes out your color. (3) Transporting your subject to a new world using a digital projector and creative lighting. For this example we create an ‘Emerald City’ inspired image, project it behind the subject and then use light to unify the subject with the scene from directionality and color. Throughout the video, I explain how I analyze light, control contrast, and make creative decisions so each image feels intentional—not sterile—even though everything starts with a simple white background.
