From Marker Pen to Cigar With A Little AI Assistance | Gavin Hoey

When your photo session need a big old cigar to add to the story, but you don’t want all the lingering smell, high expense and the potential health risks, there’s only one thing to do… fake it! That’s exactly what photographer Gavin Hoey does in this photography tutorial and he begins the fake cigar process by handing his model, Rob, a big red maker pen. His plan? Swap the pen for a cigar in post processing after the session with the help of generative AI. Of course props only tell part of the story and it all starts with light, so Gavin takes you through his three point lighting set-up one light at a time. He shares his thoughts on what each light adds to the final look and then adds the secret ingredient to the scene… Smoke, lots of smoke! After the photography session, Gavin takes you into Photoshop and shows how Generative AI can quickly ruin a perfectly good photo. Once that’s over he re-groups and shows how Generative AI, when do with care and forethought, can work alongside the photography process to make already great images look amazing in just a few clicks.
