In a move unique to its species, it sheds its armor in two separate halves. First, the old rear shell splits off, leaving the back half of its body soft, white, and vulnerable. It looks two-toned: brown armor in the front, pure white fragility in the back. After the new rear armor hardens, it sheds the front half, emerging entirely soft-bodied and ghostly white. This new, flexible "skin" will slowly harden and darken over the next few days, completing its transformation and preparing it for its next stage of growth. It is a true miracle of the micro-world!
