In this livestream I finally dug back into a laptop I’ve been hoarding in storage for about four months: the Dell Latitude E6420 XFR ultra rugged. This is very much a first look (for you and me), because I hadn’t even properly tested it yet. The big takeaway right away is the vibe—this thing is chunky, boxy, and honestly looks mean compared to a Panasonic Toughbook. It’s also wildly impractical as a daily driver: it’s around 9.5–10 pounds, has a bunch of sealed doors you have to open just to access ports, and even the SD card slot placement is… not great. I walk through the rugged design details, like the latched panels and the foam/rubber sealing around the I/O doors that’s meant to keep water out. Port-wise, it’s loaded with “business/field” stuff: VGA and serial under one panel, HDMI and eSATA under another, plus USB ports and a DVD drive. Mine showed up missing a hard drive (and it looks like a couple exterior panels may be missing too), so it can’t boot an OS yet—these originally shipped with Windows 7, and Dell even listed Ubuntu 10.10 as an option. At the end, I plug it in and confirm it powers on, then jump into the BIOS to see what I actually bought: a 2011-era system with a 2nd gen dual-core i7 at 2.7GHz and 4GB of DDR3-1333.
