For the Mellow Climbing Rock Games 2025 comp, the rule was simple: outdoor bouldering videos only. The problem? My buddy Benjamin Zuk and I didn’t have time to get out on real rock… so we did what any responsible climbers would do—we improvised, hahaa. That’s how “MellaFresh” was born: a technically-outdoor bouldering film shot on Ben’s outdoor MoonBoard 2016 set. It’s goofy, it’s a little unhinged, and it somehow still scratches that “mini documentary” vibe we were going for. In this video I’m basically along for Ben’s mastermind ride—he filmed it, edited it, and came up with the whole whacky concept—while we try to make something that feels like an outdoor mission even though we’re pulling plastic. The big takeaway is that creativity beats perfect conditions: if you can’t get to the crag, you can still build a story, get after it, and make something fun. It didn’t make it past the first round of voting (rip), but now it lives here, and honestly I’m just stoked it gets to exist.
